This democratic congress is so corrupt ( a business would
be in jail).   The taxes & fines start 2010 and the insurance 2014?
Are people clueless or just don't care.   Keep the people informed
 without  newspapers (that are not bias) talk radio & Fox cable
news  the congress shenanigans would be hidden by Harry Reid
 & Nancy Pelosi, and of course Sen. Kerry and Sen. Kirk, have
 gone along with them by voting for this  bribe ridden healthcare bill.

WHEN…WHY…WHO…I’M JUST ASKING

WHEN…WHY…WHO…I'M JUST ASKING

When did "IN GOD WE TRUST" become something evil?  When did our Judeo-Christian principles and belief system become something to attack and to scorn?  When did saying "MERRY CHRISTMAS" become a crime or intolerant?  Why do we allow anti-American sentiment to form our domestic and foreign policy agendas?  Why do we no longer embrace sovereignty as a nation?  Why do we allow others to break our laws and, after doing so, provide them safe harbor?  Why do we spend our treasury housing, feeding, educating, and defending those criminals?  When, in a time of war, did it become okay to try illegal enemy combatants in federal court with all the constitutional protections afforded American citizens?  When engaged with an enemy in war time, why do we put limits on the rules of engagement and unnecessarily risk the lives of our men and women in uniform?  Why do we no longer fight conflicts with the intent to WIN? 

Why do we now have "reverse discrimination," and when did that become okay?  Why do we have politicians who live to divide the American people along racial lines, rather than bring us together as "Americans" and move the nation forward as one "undivided people?"  Why do we have legislators that seek to exacerbate the issue of race, or sexual preference, in America by passing a "hate crimes" bill, having as its sole purpose to prosecute certain acts, based on these factors (aren't crimes by definition hateful acts regardless of race, gender, or other reasons?)?  The undeniably perverted truth is that certain factions in this country will use this legislation to exert a toll on those they perceive to be their enemy and, rather than improve race relations, will ultimately harm and possibly reverse all the good that has come to pass in the last fifty years.  Why are we "the American people" accused of being "a nation of cowards?"  Why are extreme far left groups allowed to influence our way of life to the point of changing who we are as a people, how we conduct economic policy, and what we stand for as a nation to the detriment of all?  Why won't the left have a rational debate, instead of accusing those who hold a different view as being a racist, a war monger, a Nazi, a tea bagger, or a greedy capitalist?  Why are we allowing this assault on our way of life from the very people we elect as our representatives in Washington? 

Why are we apologizing for being the greatest nation on the face of the earth?  When chastised, why do we not proudly stand and proclaim; if not for America, the world would be far worse off.  For all its foibles, America is where people come to escape the kinds of hatred, genocide, political oppression, and lack of opportunity experienced in other parts of the world   Instead of castigating the nation, why do we not promote America as "a beacon of hope and freedom," as an inspiration to the rest of the world?  Clearly, while other countries criticize the U.S., their own citizens are clamoring to seek refuge in this country. 

When did the spoils of our labor become property of the US Government to redistribute?  When did it start to make sense to hold a "JOBS SUMMIT" without inviting and listening to the organizations that represent businesses in America, like the "Chamber of Commerce, etc.?  When did politicians stop believing in the American people to lift themselves out of bad economic times?  When did the politicians fail to understand that government is not the answer to mankind's problems?  Why do the democrats think that socialism will work, when across the globe it has failed at every level?  Why is the Chinese culture turning to western capitalistic principles to increase their wealth, and succeeding while the rest of the world is struggling? 

Why has our own government become "Anti-American, anti-capitalism, anti-business, ant-freedom?  When did capitalism become something to destroy?  Why are we, as a people, forsaking our values, our history, our heritage, and our freedom?  Why have "WE THE PEOPLE" allowed this to happen? 

Who will change this circumstance?  Who will stand up for the principles this country was founded upon?  Who will stand up for freedom?  Who will restore the country to its rightful place in the world?  Who will be brave and stand up for America?  I'm just asking.

In response to Mr. MacKeen's article, let's look at the facts. We now have the most liberal president since Jimmy Carter. He constantly blames Pres. Bush for everything. Since Obama took office, we have lost more than 3.5 MM jobs and increased the deficit to $1.42 trillion and counting.

Within two days, he signed a document to close Guantanamo Bay with no back up plan. Isn't that what the democrats said about Pres. Bush..no back up plan? General McChrystal is still waiting for an answer to his plan for more troops. We no longer have terrorists or a war on terror, but criminals and overseas contingencies or man caused disasters. Now five of the most dangerous terrorists are being tried as civilians in NY and the Fort Hood massacre was an act of terror by a radical Islamic Jihadist and the result of political correctness, which he refuses to acknowledge.

Pres. Obama was never vetted by the worshiping press and has surrounded himself with socialist radicals, such as Van Jones, Anita Dunn, Bill Ayers, George Soros, SEIU president (his most frequent visitor), ACORN (a corrupt illegal enterprise), and Rev. Wright, who he listened to for 20 years and claims didn't hear him condemning our country.

He immediately goes on an "apology tour" badmouthing America, instead of promoting America as a great and generous nation that has done more for human rights, the poor, the downtrodden, and the oppressed in the world than any other nation in history.

The rhetoric used by this president is totally contrary with the reality of his policies. If you take Pres. Obama at his word, you are either badly misinformed or blind to the facts.Transparency, lobbyists, ethics, bi-partisanship, jobs, you name it.. what was promisedin the campaign has yet to be remotely acted upon or realized.

Real unemployment is now at 17.5%, when including those no longer eligible to collect those under-employed, and those that have stopped looking.

The healthcare bill is being shoved down our throats, with no transparency, and will end up turning the country into a socialist nation and bankrupting it in the process. The democrats have hidden behind closed doors and have stooped to buying votes for $300 MM just to bring it to the floor for consideration. Rep. Pelosi wants a VAT tax,and Sen. Obey wants a surtax for the war in Afghanistan on salaries low as $30,000.00. These are just a few of the facts.

I can't wait for 2010 when we can vote out the democrats who are bankrupting this country. While Pres. Bush was no bargain, he was a piker compared to Pres. Obama. The government should not control everything, for if they do we will become another Venezuela. There is no free lunch, someone has to pay for it, and that someone is us, "the taxpayer".

Let's hope common sense prevails in the coming months. We desperately need it,
because the above will negatively change our way of life forever.

The Demise of a Nation (part 5), by Murray Regan

The truth is that our constitutional, financial, and personal freedoms as Americans are being diminished by the day. The intervention in our every day lives is astounding and, ultimately, destructive to the ideals on which this country was founded; that as citizens we were endowed with the unalienable rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.......and “to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.” Sadly, I think a vast number of people in this country have forgotten what it is to be an “American” citizen. We are not “citizens of the world.”

Those of you who suggest that government is there to protect the weakest of us are misled into thinking that it was always thus or that it is a good thing. I refer, in this case, to welfare etal. At its inception, “relief” as it was once called began as a result of the depression of 1930’s and was supposed to be a temporary helping hand for folks on hard times. It was once considered an embarrassment to be on relief because the individual had a sense of pride and self worth. Out of this act of generosity by the government (the taxpayer) was borne the “New Deal” (social security etal) and “The Great Society,” (housing and urban development etal) both well-intentioned but ultimately failed policies. While charity would seem righteous by definition, it should be tempered with “tough love” and limits. Only then is the individual truly “helped” by offering them a way out and a different path to follow.

Today, welfare and other social programs have morphed into a gigantic, out of control, untenable social system that is bankrupting our country. The intent of these programs have gone from one of temporary help to a way of life for far too many of our citizens, which is encouraged by the power brokers in Washington, as well as at the state level. It has gotten so bad that we are now giving hard earned taxpayer money to illegal aliens, instead of closing the borders and deporting those who break our laws…yes we supposedly have laws on the books to stop illegal entry into the country, as we should, being a sovereign nation…so much for the rule of law. For those of you who say that our ancestors were illegal immigrants. Some were; however, they were not given taxpayer welfare as soon as they stepped off the boat or crawled over the wall. Many who came over as immigrants had relatives that agreed to take them in, house them, feed them, and find them work. They made their own way and thrived after a couple of generations even in the face of long odds – I refer to the Irish, as an example, who were ostracized for being Irish, shunned by the establishment and not allowed to work in many industries or take advantage of other opportunities. Nonetheless, they picked themselves up, dusted themselves off, and moved forward. But, I digress.

I suggest that because of these well meaning but, ultimately, insidious notions, there are a vast number of citizens in this country that have been borne and indoctrinated into a way of life that is unhealthy for their minds, bodies, and souls and one they find nearly impossible to leave or from which to escape. They have been denied the hope and the opportunity at a better life, not because of the white man or the rich man, but because they are “taken care of” by the government. This leaves them with little, if any, incentive to work hard and reach for the promise that is America because they grow up in a world of despair created by those who claim to be their protectors, their champions. By coddling these citizens, the government is denying them the dignity and desire to become more than their circumstance will allow. In effect, the “politician” has built and maintained the lifestyle of the poorest among us. The “War on Poverty” has been waging for decades and we are no closer to, in fact are further from, the desired outcome, even after spending trillions of taxpayer dollars on the issue.

Good article, right on, I am fortunate as a senior that I do not need this $250.00, but my children could use it and other families. Many seniors do need this help and therefore it should be issued by  need.  Pres. Obama is trying to bribe the seniors, because he will cut their healthcare.

As far as inflation the increase in my monthly rent fee of $40.00 is not a mirage.  I do not know where the government is getting their figures but property taxes, utilities etc are going up.  Just wait until the cap & trade bill goes through & the additional taxes, fees for the healthcare bill will be enacted. 


Keep on spending congress and we will all be speaking Chinese because they will own us.

The Demise of a Nation (part 4), by Murray Regan

The expenditure of our treasury by Mr. Obama, in the name of "stimulus, bailout, et al" was a convenient scapegoat (excuse) for expanding the already bankrupt social programs that continue to exert a crushing burden on our country. The only way to pay for these unfunded "entitlements," created by an out of control government, is through crushing taxation, which, if nothing is done to stop it, will be a reality in a few short years. Thanks for the $400 tax break, Mr. President. When are the politicians going to realize that eventually you have to pay for your folly; and when are the American taxpayers going to wake up to the fact that they are the one's that will have to bear the cost of this folly in the end and the end is nearer than you think, especially when you consider that only 50% of the population will actually be paying any tax at all.

The disingenuousness with which this administration purports to be "responsible" and "transparent" is laughable, if it weren't so tragic. If it were as responsible as it claims to be, it would "live within its means" as most ordinary Americans do when times get tough. If it were as transparent as it claims to be, Mr. Obama would have stood up on the campaign trail and professed to the American people that he believes in and embraces the radical expansion of government and its power over the people, which he is in the process of accomplishing; superseding the rule of law when it suites him; wealth redistribution; racial quotas; socialism; legislating social change from the bench rather than interpretation and adjudication of existing law, etc. I dare say most Americans have been hood-winked into thinking that what is happening is good for the country, when the exact opposite is true. This fraud was also aided and abetted by the so-called mainstream media who took it upon itself to perpetrate this deceit in concert with the Obama camp. When Mr. Obama professes to be laying a foundation for a sustainable economy for the 21st century and beyond, what he is really saying is he wants to take your money and give it to someone else who doesn't deserve it. In addition, he is now trying (and succeeding to some degree) to manipulate what cars we will drive regardless of cost, what executive compensation will be, what sources of energy to pursue regardless of cost, when we should be taking advantage of all available sources within our reach, including nuclear, gas, oil, coal, etc. The environmentalists in this country are essentially forcing us to go abroad for our resources, rather than exploit our own. This, in turn, has created a scenario whereby we are funding, in part, the jihad against our own people.

Obama, who professed that he does not want to be running the auto industry, is doing just that. He has given portions of two private automotive manufacturers to the UAW and dismissed, out of hand, the creditors and investors who either invested in or lent billions to these companies. In the case of Chrysler, the creditors were threatened by the administration if they didn't comply with its wishes to give up claims to their legal rights under contracts they entered into in good faith. Ask yourselves; what does this interference by government say to the capital markets, without which there is no investment in American businesses and, ipso facto, in the economy itself? An atmosphere in which contracts are broken at the whim of government officials is far too risky and breeds mistrust of those who seek to do so. This attitude by government will result in much higher interest rates demanded by the capital markets to fund investment in American enterprise because of the fear that the legal contracts (i.e. – bonds, etc.) entered into may be unjustly set aside by executive decree for any number of reasons. What the government should have done was to mind its own business and let the companies fail on their own without any bailout. As usual, politicians who think they know best are far too cavalier with our resources. As a result, their irresponsibility has served only to delay the inevitable and, as such, has cost the American taxpayers billions, which we will never see again and anyone who thinks the opposite is either a liar or naively ignorant.

The Demise of a Nation, (Part 3), by Murray Regan

This premise that the people should control their own resources and fate goes against everything the present administration stands for and embraces. It wants and is taking the people’s power and money from them at an alarming rate. It is being allowed to implement their socialist agenda with ease, seemingly without opposition. In fact, anyone who dares to disagree with this administration is viciously attacked by the media and the administration’s own henchmen. It is unabashed in its fervor to create a world where those of us who play by the rules, work hard to make a living (which now takes two incomes per household in many cases), pay our taxes, are law abiding, and are just trying to get ahead, are summarily dismissed as second class citizens and taken for patsies and fools. Mr. Obama has admitted in his own words that The Constitution of the United States is “a charter of negative liberties” and that the Supreme Court should have addressed “the redistribution of wealth” in the Warren Court. It is interesting to note, that while the rest of us are struggling through this recession, the “government” is enjoying a rebirth, an expansion, if you will, the likes of which we have never seen. Those who chastised the previous administration for saddling this country with the largest debt in history have conveniently ignored the fact that the current administration has quadrupled the debt and did it within the first two months of coming to power, unlike Mr. Bush who ran up the bill over an eight year period, mostly in defense of the nation against radical Islam extremists. Don’t get me wrong, I am no fan of Mr. Bush either, based on his spending habits. He and the established Republican Party have forgotten their core principles as conservative-minded, fiscally responsible, stewards of our resources. In fact, both parties have contributed to the bastardization of government over time. It is now a bloated entity of itself, by itself and for itself that has created its own constituency made up of nearly 50% of the population by means of income redistribution. It has effectively propagandized this constituency into “conditioned” dependents, rather than promote an independent, self sufficient citizenry.

Regarding the redistribution of wealth and intervention and manipulation of government into the private sector; a case in point is the mess we find ourselves in concerning the economic meltdown. The truth is that, during the Carter and Clinton administrations, politicians decided that more people should own homes, whether they could afford them or not under the guise of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). So, the justice department began pressuring banks, on the pretext of racial and socio-economic discrimination, to lower their lending standards. This, unfortunately, gave rise to tremendous unabashed abuse by, fraud in, and corruption of the banking system. Again, while this policy was well-intentioned, it went against free market principles and every day common sense. It was designed, through free market manipulation, to artificially improve the lives of the poorest among us without having to endure the sacrifices needed to truly achieve the American dream of home ownership and independence by building equity (savings). Contrary to popular belief, not everyone is suited for or responsible enough to own a home. Once again, the government has shown itself to be a faulty social engineer. When government intervenes in any free market system, it fails and fails with far reaching, unintended consequences as we are now realizing and experiencing. Sadly, government’s answer to the problems they create is more intervention after blaming everyone else for the crisis. Now we are faced with astronomical debt that cannot be paid off for generations to come unless taxes are increased to the point of crippling this nation and bringing it to its knees. The answer has always been and always will be to get out of the way and let free market principles work with sensible regulation not borne of ideological intent. When markets over reach there are consequences and it should be left to the market to correct itself. This means that no business should be “too big to fail.” For if “rescue” is the path we choose, it serves to encourage bad behavior, because the greedy among us will know that there are no consequences for their actions when government is all too willing to step in and “rescue” those that misbehave. Regrettably, the pull of personal wealth creation and self aggrandizement has created a culture of politicians “cozying up” to “big” business, which is not good for anyone except those at the top of the food chain, including those politicians who “cozy up” to big business and other special interests to the detriment of the American people. We must all recognize that this incestuous behavior happens far too often between politicians and any number of special interests. The problem is that we, as “stewards of our own destiny,” are far too myopic in our perceptions and attitudes toward government. We must keep in mind that government does not create jobs and it does not create wealth. In the end, government only complicates matters by trying to manipulate free enterprise. What it does do well is to take from its productive citizens and redistributes the wealth created by those citizens, but in the process it becomes a burden to society. When all is said and done, the government is a cost that the taxpayer must bear. The problem with trying to solve every ill for every citizen or special interest, no matter the cost, is eventually you run out of other people’s money.

RE “RACE and Obama’s critics’’ (Letters, Sept. 24): As of today, I think this is still the United States of America. I do have the right to criticize the Congress or the president and not be called a racist. Because I may not like how Congress is trying to shove the health care bill, cap and trade, and bank and car industry takeovers down my throat, the Constitution gives me the right to speak out and voice my concerns. The town-hall meetings and tea parties are my right, or is it only the left that can do this?

Democrats in Congress are resistant to putting the health care bill on the Internet so that it could be viewed by the public. Does this request make us racists according to Jimmy Carter? Representative John Conyers Jr. admits he doesn’t read bills he signs. Are we racist because we want congressmen to read the bills that will greatly affect our lives?

President Obama was elected in this white-majority country - does that mean that those who did not vote for him are racist? When people shout the complaint of “racist,’’ it means you cannot have an intelligent debate about issues that are of great concern to many Americans.

It strikes me as wildly hypocritical and utterly reprehensible that our elected officials constantly preach to the American people on any issue of the day, citing the moral high ground on such things as injustice and inequality in America, when they are the one’s promoting it the most. To make matters worse, they fail at every level to practice what they preach and consistently lie, steal and cheat the American people out of billions, and now trillions, of hard earned taxpayer dollars in government waste, fraud, corruption, failed ideas and policies to satisfy their own selfish wants, self aggrandizement, and warped sense of right and wrong. They practice the politics of hate and tear each other down at every opportunity, at the expense of everything else, especially at the expense of doing what is right for the American people and the country, as a whole. The so-called “Liberal” factions in this country are especially practiced at these disingenuous smear campaigns and continually bristle at the idea of, and lash out at, anyone perceived as doing the very same to them. They act like little children whining that they didn’t get a cookie and blame others for their shortcomings never taking responsibility for their own mistakes or misdeeds.

To eliminate this unfortunate consequence of such a flawed system run by the flawed human condition in our leaders (tongue firmly planted in cheek), the system must change, and I don’t mean toward socialism. The control of our resources and money should be redirected into the hands of local governments so we know exactly where our money and resources are going and not rely on politicians in Washington, where the money is out of our control as to where it goes and to whom it is given. The promise of responsible and accountable government, so far from the source of the resources on which it thrives, is a fantasy and a lie, constantly promoted by those who seek to subvert individual liberties and freedoms. In the end, we are a republic of 50 states and it is at the local level where the power should reside where it is much easier to hold people accountable. To be sure, for all its faults, the system our forefathers created is the best in the world and held in high esteem by many. Sadly, however, it is slipping away because of the hubris, greed, and poor judgment of those we elect to represent us. There is a saying, which we should all heed. The saying goes…the government that is big enough to give you what you want, is a government big enough to take everything you have. This truism is closer than you think to becoming reality and to ignore it is to do so at our own peril as a nation.

It has gotten to the point now that other socialist countries are warning the United States against its proclivity to borrow and spend. In fact, there is a back-lash presently underway in Europe against Socialism. In this country, the taxpayers currently work nearly half a year to pay the taxes levied against them. The way things are “progressing,” we will look back on this state of affairs with fondness because to pay for the mounting debt we are now facing will require huge tax increases. The movement toward socialism is happening right under our noses and the Republican Party is bickering over the direction it should take. It seems plainly obvious to me in what direction it should go – to be blunt the “powers that be” should stop worrying about their own power grab and start worrying about the direction the country is taking under democratic rule. If the Republicans focus on their core principles of small government, lower taxation, less government intrusion into our private lives, and more focus on individual freedoms, the Republicans will reach their objectives and regain power in Congress and the White House.

Be forewarned, however, the events of the last few decades, with particular focus on recent history, must be reversed if we are to survive as a nation and remain a beacon of hope for the rest of the world. This fiscal year alone, we are facing a $2 trillion deficit. Also, Congress is currently debating a massive government implemented health care system projected to cost $2 trillion over the next decade alone, as well as a “value added” tax, which will add additional sales taxes on everything we purchase. In one European nation, the value added tax doubles the cost of a vehicle for each consumer. The “cap and trade” energy policy touted by Mr. Obama will cost every household upwards of $2,000 annually to pay for it. We must stop this madness now.

Letter to Secretary Galvin. Where is the Emergency?

Dear Secretary Galvin:

I am writing to urge you to reject Governor Deval Patrick's expected letter attempting to invoke article II of amendment 48, The Referendum, II, declaring an emergency to enact the law allowing for an interim senator to fill a vacant U.S. Senate seat. The General Court rejected an emergency preamble; and, the Governor does not have the Constitutional authority to file with the Secretary of the Commonwealth a letter, in accordance with article 48, The referendum, II, declaring that the preservation of the public convenience requires that the law be immediately effective.

This is not a political opinion, this is a legal decision so issued by the Supreme Judicial Court in an Opinion of the Justices to the Governor (368 Mass 889, October 27, 1975). In following said SJC's 1975 opinion, Governor Patrick is not within his constitutional powers, and accordingly, this letter respectfully request that you do not accept said emergency declaration for filing with your office

The Supreme Judicial Court has set forth that the Governor's letter to the Secretary declaring an emergency law can only be used when a law is subject to a referendum; and further, only when the law could be subject to suspension of its operation under The Referendum, III, Section 3. In such an instance, the Governor's letter declaring an emergency law would have the effect of terminating that suspension. No such suspension of law threat is viable in this case. The law, as signed, cannot be subject to a referendum petition or a request for suspension. According to the Secretary of the Commonwealth's web site, submission of original petitions to Attorney General to originate an initiative petition for a constitutional amendment were due August 5, 2009. That date has passed, and with a special election slated for January 19, 2010 a referendum cannot be had.

In the SJC's opinion referenced herein, the Court explained that the Governor's declaration of emergency can only be used to close the threat of a referendum suspension of the law. As that is not the case in this instance, the people of the Commonwealth do not have The Referendum III, section 3 suspension as an option, as was intended by the authors of our constitutional protections and processes. So, no such threat exists.

According to the SJC: "The gubernatorial authority to forestall or undo the suspensive effect of a referendum petition was imported into article 48 as one of the means of providing some check on the power of a small minority of the voters to nullify adopted legislation until the next eligible Statewide election." As stated, there is no circumstance of such a referendum suspension threat regarding the current matter. As explained, this cannot even be in this case; therefore, the Governor is acting outside of his constitutional authority of protecting the citizen's from a "small minority of the voters." Moreover, the Governor is acting outside his authority to unilaterally overrule the will of the General Court, our Commonwealth's representatives.

Therefore, I respectfully implore you to exercise your Constitutional authority and to not accept the Governor's letter. Or, at the least, please seek an SJC advisory opinion regarding the Constitutionality of your accepting a patently unconstitutional letter from the Governor.

Mr. Secretary, you are our Commonwealth's final line of defense in upholding the Constitution on behalf of its citizens. We are grateful for your service to our state.

The Demise of a Republic - The Views of an Ordinary Citizen

We as a citizenry have relied far too often and given far too much credit, and power I might add, to the politicians in this country, whether it is our state reps or solons in Washington. We as a people and a nation have veered far off course from the core principals on which this nation was founded. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness are chief among them. These principles mean (among other things) that, as human beings and citizens of this republic, we should not be subjected to the whims of a politician or legislator who, at the expense of the many, creates a law or statute that benefits a small minority and treats it as a “special class” with “special protections.” That sentiment goes against the very basic principal of equality.

A case in point is the “hate crime” legislation which is already law and continuously promoted and perverted as a sensible idea. In fact, it is a fallacious argument on its face, in life and in law. Is it not a hateful act to assault, rob, rape or murder anyone regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation or social status? The fact that politicians want to give special status to one group over another is abhorrent to anyone with a sense of true justice and forthrightness in their heart. It also serves to divide one group from another, which, in turn, promotes and creates hostile feelings and unproductive, harmful discourse between those groups. Unfortunately, pitting one group against another is what the “politician” is truly adept at these days.

Take the tax code for instance. Is it fair to have a graduated tax code, so that one group pays more of a percentage of their income than another? The tax code should be flat across the board so everyone pays the same percentage of any income they earn with no more loopholes or write-offs – simple yet effective and, as a result, eliminates, not only, any cause for divisiveness but also the temptation for politicians to play favorites because, by definition, it can not be manipulated to anyone’s advantage if left alone. This idea should also apply to any and all companies, corporations, LLC’s or any other entity that makes money, save perhaps legitimate charitable organizations. Just think of the savings we would realize by getting rid of the IRS. In my humble opinion, we should also look to tax private institutions of higher learning. They should be required to share equally in the burden we all bare, since they benefit from services provided by the town or city in which they reside. Just think of the added revenue realized by adding private institutions to the tax roles.

Conservatism Sweeps the Nation

Republicans, Democrats and Independents. Those are the three political groupings into which most Americans identify themselves. The recently heard voices regarding the Government's intervention in areas previously left to the ups and downs of the free enterprise system, and most recently into their personal health plans, seem to go well outside those identities.

People that are being heard loudly and clearly concerning these government infringements have been expressing themselves from a conservative slant rather than from that of any particular party affiliation, as members of all parties are clearly in opposition to any form of government control over their life choices. This has reared up before, when non Republicans, particularly those called "Reagan Democrats" helped sweep Republican Ronald Reagan into office.

Conservatism, the politically opposite of Liberalism, is commonly thought to be the same as Republicanism, but the two are not synonymous. Conservatism, which frowns on Government control and encourages freedom of entrepreneurship and individual decision making and responsibility, has spread through the Nation in our ongoing debate over health care reform. We are witnessing this outpouring of protest from those in the ranks of the so called "Silent Majority" - those who it would normally take much to get involved deeply into a public conversation about legislative doings. The astounding drop in the polls regarding confidence in Obama's handling of health care and other issues indicates that the American populace is keenly aware of the daily variations emanating from the White House.

Liberalism, particularly as expressed by the Far Left, has seemed to have had very little positive influence in this debate and, in fact, has attracted attention to its own basic assault on the traditional American way of life. Conservative Democrats who disagree with the policies of this administration and who find Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's calling dissenters "Nazis", "unruly mob", and "un American" reprehensible, may decide to vote for Republican candidates in the 2010 mid term elections. Conservative Independents who had voted Democratic in 2008 will find it much easier to do likewise.

We want our Country and ourselves to succeed. If we are going to tamper with the successes that have made our country the greatest in the world, we should carefully examine any and all dramatic changes to this system. Our government should proceed slowly, and carefully, with a full consideration of what these major changes would bring. To get a plan through just to get a plan through, particularly one that would be run so completely by the Government, is not only unwise, but is not in line with the efforts we expect from our elected officials.

Letter to the Editor of the Milton Times

The ongoing and general uproar over President Obama's health care reform bill(s) is a real eye opener. The rush to pass his signature bill has enormous ramifications for every one of us. We are all going to be affected and will continue to be affected by whatever passes long after Mr. Obama leaves office.

Few of us, and this, apparently, includes some of those elected officials who will vote on it, have read the bill. My recent telephone conversation with an aide in my congressman's office gave this response when I expressed my concerns about the way Congress was handling the issue. He said "the congressman is still reading the bill". If he was still reading the bill, he would have been unread about its contents if the Speaker had called for a vote before the August recess.

I am a very senior citizen who has always been satisfied with my health insurance coverage. I cannot help but wonder about all those Obama loyalists who are blindly supporting his wishes without stopping to realize that whatever does pass, that they, too, are going to be affected. They are going to help pay the enormous costs related to it, and are going to abide to the changes it will bring to their present coverage. They may not care, but there are many more who do care.

President Obama has clearly stated that in some cases, especially regarding senior citizens, that it may be more cost efficient to by pass necessary surgery and prescribe pain killers instead. It will be easy to project this approach toward human sufferings to include that of the incurably handicapped and disabled. I find this financial benefit approach versus the dignity of life approach to be repulsive and contrary to every thing for which the United States of America stands. For the President of the United States to even consider this aspect of the proposed bill is incomprehensible and should removed from discussion.

President Obama's drive to enforce government control into many functions of the American way of life, and now including how our personal health programs should be changed, is suffocating to those who believe in personal responsibility and decision making. Let's hope and pray that our elected officials can put politics aside - at least on this bill - and vote for what their constituency thinks is best for themselves.

Christy Mihos, Republican Candidate for Governor, Visits Milton

The first GOP candidate to throw his hat in the 2010 ring for Governor, Christy Mihos, paid a visit to the Milton Republican Town Committee tonight to make his case for office and take questions from local citizens. Mr. Mihos positioned himself as a populist candidate and fiscal conservative who believes that this combination is what the citizens of the Commonwealth want most in the upcoming election. He listed 6 policy points in answers to questions from the audience. He supports:

1) Asking those who join him in public service to agree to waive participation in the State's pension program,
2) Reduce the State's workforce by 10% for a savings of $600mm annually,
3) Lift the cap on Charter Schools,
4) Permit slot machines in authorized race tracks while opposing the opening of casinos,
5) Consolidate the independent Authorities (Turnpike, etc.) into the relevant state agencies so that they become answerable to the people,
6) Bring greater customer service to the Registry of Motor Vehicles by delegating their responsibilities to local cities and towns. For example, your town hall would process your plates while local police would administer driving tests.

He laid out the case for what he wants to do. But with a State House dominated by Democrats, who regularly thwart the initiatives of their own Governor, let alone the voters, how is he going to turn his ideas into law? Here is his starting point:

Senate: GOP = 5 Dem = 35
House: GOP = 16 Dem = 143
Total: GOP = 21 Dem = 188

Here is his 2010 goal:

Senate GOP Adds in 2010 = +10
House GOP Adds in 2010 = +20
Total After 2010 GOP = 51 Dem = 158

To help make this happen, he will personally donate $500 to any GOP candidate for statewide office to help jumpstart fundraising. Further, he asserted that he will swear off taking any campaign funds raised by the state party so that all the money is completely available for other candidates.

Mr. Mihos presented himself well, made his case and converted some skeptics. That's a change you can believe in.

MRTC Members and Friends

I wanted to report back to you on the results of yesterday’s “Support Our Troops” event at the American Legion Post’s Heritage Hall in Milton. I believe it is fair to say that this event was a big success in more ways than one. According to Steve Doyle, President of CarePacks, Inc., who along with several of his board members actively participated, the event was a success. In addition to the nearly $1,500 in checks (still more to come), we received, donations of “wish list items” from scores of contributors, filled an entire storage bin in CarePacksWeymouth warehouse.

We all learned a lot from this event and next year, we will be even better prepared and organized. There are a lot of people I want to thank who made this all possible. From the MRTC, I want to thank Murray Regan, Event Coordinator, who really stepped up early and often and who worked diligently and with commitment. Murray did a fabulous job and deserves a big round of applause. There are others from the MRTC who also worked very hard – Janet Christensen, Janet Irwin and family, Maralin Manning, Mimi Sundstrom, John and Astrid Hajjar, Bob Hiss, Bob Reetz, Lynda-Lee Sheridan, Chris Huban and I am sure others who worked behind the scenes. I also want to thank Jennifer Logue, Chairwoman of the Quincy Republican City Committee and Paul Burke of the QRCT, two people who did yeomen’s work and really generated a lot of support from Quincy. Gratitude is also to be extended to Paul Nephew, Commander of the American Legion Post and Milton Police Officer Ed Villard. In addition, many thanks to Bernie Lynch and Mike and Chris Lynch of Milton Cable Access who really helped to get the word out. And many thanks to the several sponsors including, Milton Fruit Center, Quincy Credit Union, Quincy Fire Fighters Local 792, Frito-Lay, Costco, Tino’s Pizza, William J. Sullivan Insurance Agency, Radio Coffee House, Grono & Christie, Atlantic Insurance Group Agency, Fitness Unlimited and Montillio’s Bakery. Others that deserve a round of applause include John Campo, Boy Scout Troop Master and his band of young scouts, and also the group of terrific young ladies from Milton High School, who really had community spirit. I am sure I left some people out, and if I did, I apologize.

I also want to thank Milton Selectman John Shields for stopping by to lend his support. Although this event was co-sponsored by the Quincy and Milton Republican Committees, this in no way was a political event. Rather, it was an event designed to embrace a great cause which is to send to our men and women of the military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, who sacrifice their lives every day so you and I can live in freedom, an expression of our gratitude. This event, a token of our appreciation to all who serve our country, was not a political event nor did it have any political undertones. Rather, it was a demonstration of how all Americans who truly appreciate their country and who dedicate themselves to making America the great nation it is, can put petty politics aside and rally around our troops and say “thank you.” The people who took the time to go out and purchase “wish list” items and write checks, and pass out flyers and send e-mails, included Republicans, Independents and Democrats, and what they all have in common is a love of their country and those who protect us. I would like to think that the absence of our other elected officials was because they either were not aware of the event or had a pre-arranged commitment.

Regardless of the reason for the absence of other elected Milton officials, our “Support the Troops” event will be an annual event until every American military man and woman is back safe in American. God Bless our Troops – God Bless America, and Happy Birthday America.
